Finally jumped on the Google Ads bandwagon? Good!

Using it properly is fairly simple – all you need to know are a few basic steps in order to set up your first campaign.

Step 1 – Set up your account

On the Google Ads homepage, you’ll find ‘Start Now’ on the top-right corner of the page. Click on that and you’ll be asked to set up a Google account or sign in if you already have one.

Step 2 – Choose business name and site

All signed in? Fantastic!

The next page will ask you to type out your business name and website URL. This URL is the landing page your users will be taken to when they click on your ad.

Step 3 – Choose your advertising objective

It’s now time to choose your main advertising objective. There are four options: get more website sign-ups/sales, get more calls, get more visits to your brick-and-mortar store, and get more views and engagement on YouTube.

Choose wisely!

Step 4 – Work on your ad

Let’s craft our ad, shall we? You may find this challenging at first as this requires a fair amount of creativity.

Luckily, Google offers tips on what you should write, although the key thing to remember here is that you want to come up with an ad copy that easily attracts and converts your visitors.

Step 5 – Keyword themes

This next page allows you to add keyword themes to match your brand. Don’t worry – Google is generous enough to suggest a few keywords of interest.

However, if you’re not sure how keyword research works, then go ahead and choose the ones Google suggests. Then click ‘Next’.

Step 6 – Set ad location

On this next page, you will be asked to select the location(s) of the first ad – i.e. where you want it to appear. This could be anywhere close to your physical business address or anywhere else, really.

You can even place your ad according to specific zip codes, cities, or regions.

Step 7 – Set budget

This page lets you utilise the budget options Google offers, or you can enter a specific budget you have in mind.

Step 8 – Confirm payment

At last, provide your billing information – and that’s how simply it is to set up a Google Ad.

Wait… there’s more

Did you know that there are additional steps you can take after account and ad setup to ensure that your ads are easily trackable and set up in the best way possible? For instance:

Linking up with your Analytics account

Chances are you have Google Analytics set up on your website, allowing you to track website traffic, see conversions, adjust goals, view unique metrics – all that good stuff!

When you link your Google Ads account with your Google Analytics account, you can make tracking, analysing and reporting between these channels and your campaigns a lot easier.
